This Blackberry Nectarine Crumble is one of the best things to make with blackberries! Served with a scoop of ice cream, who can resist two of Summer’s favorite fruits baked together in this delicious Blackberry Nectarine Crumble?

When summer rolls around, these are some of our other favorite fruit desserts using the fresh fruit that is in season: Fresh Peach Cobbler à la ModeCherry Vanilla Ice Cream, Strawberry Peach Crumble, and Raspberry Pretzel Salad.

Blackberry Nectarine Crumble

This Blackberry Nectarine Crumble has big, juicy blackberries and sweet-tart nectarines bubbling beneath a warm, buttery crumble topping. Yes, please!

It seems to me that there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer chocolate desserts and those who prefer fruit desserts. I’m not saying you can’t appreciate a fruit dessert if you are a chocolate-lover or vice versa, but it just seems like most everyone I have met falls primarily into one category or the other.

Me? I’m a fruit-dessert person, all the way. Especially in the form of this blackberry nectarine crumble. I love chocolate, don’t get me wrong, but I’ll take a pie or cobbler or crumble filled with bubbling, tangy seasonal goodness any day over something chocolate if I had to make a choice. And really, if you have to make a choice between a chocolate dessert OR a fruit dessert, just throw caution to the wind and have some of each, m’kay? I won’t judge.

My little fam and I went orchard hopping this past weekend and had ourselves a grand ol’ time at some U-pick farms eating fruit straight off the tree or bush until our fingers were stained in blackberry juice and there were drips of orange down the fronts of my little misses’ dresses from the nectarines, pluots, and apricots were were supposed to be dropping into our bucket but were instead cramming into our faces and moaning with delight over the fact that summer and it’s amazing fruit season is finally here.

We have done apple picking every September for years now, but we have never tried our hand at summer fruit picking so we were delighted to find so much variety at a bunch of small orchards not far from our home.

We let the girls take the lead and pick to their little heart’s content, and while my husband carried the bucket, I snapped pictures on my good camera and dreamed about all the culinary adventures I was going to have with whatever fruit we managed to get home. It was every momtog/food lover/fruit worshipper’s dream. That’s what I call win-win-win.

Even before we made it back to the car I was dreaming about blackberry desserts and this blackberry nectarine crumble. As an aside, does anybody distinguish between a crumble and a crisp when it comes to fruit desserts? I have always been under the impression that they are essentially the same thing except a crisp has oats in the topping while a crumble does not.

Or is it the other way around? Am I right or is this just some weird thing that I am making up?

I tried googling it and found conflicting ideas about this dessert classification and let’s not even get started on cobblers, grunts, buckles, slumps or brown bettys.

The nectarines were a little on the hard side (even though the flavor was amazing) but it was perfect because they softened up while the crumble baked so that the fruit filling still had some shape and texture, so this is the perfect dessert to make when your nectarines are still firm but you just.can’t.wait.one.more.day for them to ripen before consumption.

Also, you could use peaches (although I would peel them first) in place of nectarines and blueberries or raspberries in place of blackberries, and it would definitely be delicious!

We ate this warm (because who doesn’t eat their crumble warm?) with a scoop of homemade blackberry swirl ice cream on top (so, so, so good) but good old vanilla will do the trick too.

Because, you know, warm blackberry nectarine crumble + ice cream = all that is good and right and true in the world. Right? Right.

If you are looking for other things to make with blackberries, definitely give this Homemade Blackberry Pie a try!

6-8 nectarines, 3 cups blackberries, ⅓ cup brown sugar, 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour, Dash of salt
  • Bake for 45 minutes, or until the fruit filling is bubbling up in spots between the crumble and the crumble has turned golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool 15 minutes before serving warm, topped with a scoop of ice cream.
