Calling all peanut butter lovers! All you need are a handful of pantry ingredients to make this easy Peanut Butter Ice Cream Topping that is the perfect sauce for drizzling over ice cream, pancakes, brownies, or used for dipping fruit.
If you are making ice cream sundaes, you might also want to have some Homemade Hot Fudge on hand. Or pair this peanut butter ice cream topping with Homemade Marshmallow Sauce for a fluffernutter approach!
Peanut Butter Ice Cream Topping
This molten, liquid peanut butter sauce makes epic ice cream sundaes and will make your summer get-togethers the stuff of legends. It’s a flavor everybody loves, but no one expects, so when they see it, they always go crazy for peanut butter sauce when they see it at an ice cream sundae bar.
Peanut butter topping is yummy paired with almost any flavor you can think of, but I especially like it with chocolate ice cream flavors like rocky road or burnt almond fudge. I mean, peanut butter and chocolate is a no-brainer, right? It’s also good with fruity flavors like blackberry swirl. Think PB&J, just with ice cream and this peanut butter sauce.
Also, I definitely recommend doubling up on ice cream sauce when making ice cream sundaes. This peanut butter sauce is really good by itself, but it’s honestly incredible when you use it along with hot fudge sauce or homemade marshmallow sauce.
Ingredients in Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sauce
- creamy peanut butter
- sweetened condensed milk
- milk
- vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
One word of warning: I don’t recommend using the natural peanut butter that you have to stir to get it to combine because it doesn’t melt the same as regular creamy peanut butter.
How to Make Peanut Butter Ice Cream Topping
- Combine peanut butter and sweetened condensed milk in a small saucepan over low heat.
- Stir until the peanut butter is melted and smooth, then add milk and stir until combined. Remove from heat.
- Stir in vanilla and salt, then transfer to a jar.
- The peanut butter sauce will thicken as it cools. To make it pourable again, reheat in the microwave for 15-30 seconds, then stir.
Ways to Use Peanut Butter Ice Cream Topping
- Make all kinds of ice cream sundaes, obviously!
- Pour over toasted coconut pancakes. Or buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips in them!
- Drizzle over brownies. Especially brownies topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and hot fudge for a peanut butter hot fudge brownie sundae. I mean, c’mon.
- Pour over a pizookie topped with ice cream.
- Use it as a fondue dip for fruit like bananas and sliced apples or other dippers like big marshmallows, oreos, or chocolate graham crackers.

How long does this last on the counter?
At my house it has never lasted longer than 1 week, but I’m not sure if it would be good for longer than that. We just eat it up too quickly!
Easy Peasy and oh so good!! Will be on my list of regular sauces to make for ice cream!
I love peanut butter!! This topping was easy to make and delicious!
Will this last longer in the fridge ?
Or could I seal a mason jar with it in there?
Yes, you could keep this longer in the fridge. Just reheat before serving so it is pourable.
This was DELICIOUS!
WHAT ABOUT PUTTING SOME NUTTER BUTTER COOKIES IN A FOOD PROCESSOR AND ADDING THAT TO THE SAUCE FOR SOME NUTTER BUTTER SAUCE.
I LOVE this idea!
Very simple to make and good on ice cream
How long will the sauce keep fresh for once it’s transferred to jars please
Honestly I would say a week to two weeks. If stored in the fridge, it may last even longer. As long as it still looks ok and smells ok, you can still use it. Personally, I wouldn’t use it past two weeks though.
