Our love of Indian food goes back to our college years in Provo, Utah and the incredible Bombay House restaurant. It’s still our go-to haunt when we go back to visit and we always order the chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, and a sweet mango lassi.
Mango lassi are almost always on the menu at any of the Indian restaurants I have been to from San Francisco to London. It’s got the perfect balance of creamy, spiced, and sweet flavors and goes with so many dishes in Indian cuisine!
This is the best mango lassi recipe I’ve tried, and it’s really easy! It’s just like making a milkshake or smoothie but with a bit more flavor.
It tastes just like the ones we get from good Indian restaurants, so you know it’s good!

What You’ll Need
Scroll down to the recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.
- Mango – Use fresh, ripe mangoes when they are in season or frozen mango chunks will work just as well, although you might need a little additional mango juice to thin the drink out with frozen mango.
- Yogurt – This is a yogurt-based drink, so you’ll need either plain yogurt or vanilla yogurt. Full-fat yogurt will give you the creamiest flavor, but you can use low-fat yogurt if you prefer.
- Mango Juice – Use fresh mango juice for added sweetness and a better consistency.
- Honey – Adds sweetness and a slight honey flavor. You can use a different sweetener, like maple syrup, if you prefer.
- Vanilla Extract – Adds a warm sweetness that blends well with the other ingredients.
- Ground Cardamom – We’ll use cardamom powder for the classic spiced sweet flavor.
- Ice – If you’re using fresh mango, you can use ice cubes to chill it and give it a thicker consistency. If you’re using frozen mango, you won’t need ice cubes.
How to Make Mango Lassi

Recipe FAQ’s
Traditional mango lassi is a popular traditional Indian drink made with fresh mangoes, yogurt, and sweetener. An Indian lassi is typically flavored with spices such as cardamom or saffron, but sometimes rose water is also added for extra flavor.
Yes, you can use any type of plain or vanilla yogurt, such as Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, soy yogurt, or coconut yogurt. However, the consistency and flavor may vary slightly depending on which type you use and the fat content.
For a dairy-free option, use coconut yogurt or almond milk yogurt instead of dairy yogurt. To make vegan mango lassi, use dairy-free yogurt as well as an alternative sweetener like maple syrup instead of honey.
If you have leftover mango lassi, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to a day. Pour the lassi drinks into an airtight container or a covered pitcher and place it in the fridge. Before serving, give it a quick stir, as the ingredients may settle and thicken over time. It is best to consume the lassi within 24 hours, as the flavors and texture may change after that.
No, I wouldn’t freeze the mango lassi, as the texture may become icy and grainy when thawed. Although it would make a decent popsicle if you plan to enjoy it frozen.
Tips for Success
- The easiest way to make this smoothie is to use frozen fruit that’s already ripe and cut into pieces. Since it’s frozen, there is no need for ice cubes.
- The ground cardamom has a strong flavor, so only a small amount is needed, though, you can adjust this to your liking.
- Adjust the sweetness and thickness of the lassi according to your personal tastes. You can add more honey for sweetness and more yogurt for thickness.

Substitutions and Variations
- Add some cinnamon to the mix for a stronger spiced flavor. You could also try this drink with tumeric, nutmeg, cumin, or saffron for a different flavor.
- Adjust the sweetness and thickness of the lassi according to your personal taste. You can add more honey for sweetness and more yogurt for thickness if you wish or more mango juice if you prefer a thinner lassi.
- Try using strawberries in place of the mango for a strawberry lassi or peaches for a peach lassi.
