It’s no secret I LOVE pie. My family holds a pie party every year on PI Day (March 14) with our friends where dozens of pies get to be sampled. It’s truly the best day of the year! We have prizes for the winners in different categories and over the years I have seen and tasted some amazing pies!

Making a pie may seem like a daunting task but there are some simple and easy pie recipes that are basically foolproof! You can start with a no-bake route and use an Oreo or graham cracker crust or turn to my tried and true Perfect Flaky Pie Crust recipe.

The Best Pie Baking Tools
I love everything on this list and I hope these tools can help you get started making that perfect pie. My favorites on this list that I use all the time are my trusty bench scraper and pie shields.

- Large Silicone Mat – I love this thing for many reasons. It’s big enough to roll out a decent amount of dough, it has the round shape on the mat to help you gauge the size of crust you need, and if you are in a hurry and haven’t disinfected or cleaned your counters you can throw this mat down and roll out the dough right away.
- Large Mixing Bowl – It’s essential to have a large mixing to mix your dough in. I have had these bowls for years and they clean up nicely. The slip-proof rubber bottom is a nice feature and they are nice and light for easy handling.
- Pastry Wheel – I love this little tool to cut strips for a lattice crust (tutorial here) or to clean up the edges of the crust. The scalloped edge is particularly cute in the lattice design. You can also use this tool to cut pasta dough.
- Food Processor/Food Chopper (opt.) – This is one of those items that you don’t necessarily have to have but it is so nice to have one. Make sense? Quickly grind Oreos or graham crackers for the perfect crust. You can also chop veggies quickly for salsas and so much more. Splurge and buy this one or get this little cutie that will be great as well. I have both and love them both for different reasons.

- Digital Scale – An essential item for the kitchen is a food scale. Weighing your baking ingredients can help perfect your recipe. I sometimes also weigh my pie crust dough when I am cutting the crust in half for a top crust and bottom crust to make sure they’re even in size and weight.
- Joseph Rolling Pin – I love this rolling pin (affiliate link) and use it for everything. This helps me get a uniform crust for even baking.
- Strong mixing spoon – You will need a strong spoon to stir the flour and butter for the dough.
- Bench scraper – This handy tool isn’t just for pie, it’s great to have on hand in the kitchen. I use this to cut my dough in half or scrape up any sticky dough pieces gripping to the counter or mat. I also use it to transfer a pile of chopped veggies, herbs, or fruit to a dish, pan, or plate. It’s so much easier to sweep the food onto the scraper vs trying to carry it in my hands!

- Pie dish – Glass, Ceramic, and pie tins are all options for pie making bakeware. I like pie tins if I am blind baking a crust because the metal heats up fast and makes the crust nice and flaky. The glass and ceramic are good for double crust pies or pies that take longer to cook. The glass is nice because I can see the bottom crust and gauge how the pie is doing. Ceramic is the prettiest and I like how it gives a polished look to the pie. Either way they are all good for any type of pie.
- Pastry cutter – You will need a tool to cut the butter into the dough. Some people use a food processor (affiliate link) but I find this pastry cutter works just fine (and I actually prefer it!).

- Parchment Paper – You will not be needing this often for pies, but it’s great to have on hand for baking. If you are blind baking a crust and using some sort of pie weight you will need the parchment paper to hold the weights. I like this parchment paper because it comes in sheets making it easy to use on cookie sheets or trimming it down to whatever size i need.
- Pie Weights – I’ll be honest, I went a long time not using official pie weights for my blind baked crusts. I would use rice or sugar or beans but now having these pie weights in their cute little container that I can use over and over makes me so happy. They are so handy to have. - Crust Imprint – This little tool is completely optional but it sure adds some fun flair to your crust! Press the dough in and pull it out for a perfect little detail to use in any way you would like.
- Pastry Brush – Using an egg wash on my pie crust is non-negotiable. It helps create that perfectly golden brown glow to your crust. This little pastry brush makes the job so easy and quick. Don’t forget to sprinkle some extra sugar on top for a nice little crunch!
- Pie Server – You can’t have pie without a handy tool to dish it up! It’s the perfect little gadget to get the perfect slice safely to your plate.
- Pie Shields – These are optional but after trying to make tin foil shields that slide off or don’t stay in place, it’s nice to have a secure shield to protect that crust from burning.
