Enjoy a cool, tropical treat this summer with these creamy, refreshing and non-alcoholic Virgin Piña Coladas that are perfect for the whole family to enjoy! It’s a sip of paradise in every glass and will transport you right to the shade of a palm tree on a warm beach, no passport required!
It’s August and we are melting over here. The air conditioning has been running non-stop, the kids have been taking advantage of the sprinklers in the backyard, and we are making the best of things by grilling or making dinners that require minimal cooking.
Hence, non-alcoholic blender drinks and this easy piña colada recipe!
We love fancy drinks at our house! If you do too, be sure to try our Non-Alcoholic Mint Julep, Homemade Hawaiian Punch, Easy Brazilian Lemonade, and Homemade Blackberry Lemonade!
I don’t know about you, but I’m always exhausted by the end of the summer, to the point where even the idea of a vacation seems like too much work!
But whipping up a couple of non-alcoholic piña coladas can transport me to a tropical beach without ever having to pack my bags or deal with the resultant laundry that comes with unpacking when you get back home.
A few years ago when my oldest started elementary school, we started a tradition of having a Back-To-School Feast, after being inspired by Stephanie Nielson of NieNieDialogues.
I always try to decorate and make something special so it can be a celebratory meal, and I’m thinking these kid-friendly non-alcoholic piña coladas will be the perfect beverage to serve at this year’s feast.
My girls helped me with the recipe testing and loved the cold, frothy concoction with the cherries on top.
What is a Piña Colada?
The name piña colada is Spanish for “strained pineapple”, and it was created in Puerto Rico in the 1950’s. It has actually been the national drink of Puerto Rico since 1978!
While the traditional cocktail is made with rum, cream of coconut, and freshly strained pineapple juice, we keep things non-alcoholic around here and skip the booze.
Piña coladas can be made either blended or shaken with ice. Both are delicious, but we tend to favor the slushier blended version.
Either way, they are so fun and pretty, especially when garnished with either a pineapple wedge, marachino cherry, or both.
How to make a non-alcoholic Piña Colada
This virgin piña colada mocktail recipe couldn’t be easier. It’s literally just a matter of pouring pineapple juice and cream of coconut into a blender, then adding enough ice to reach the level of the liquid and blending.
We love our Vitamix blender and use it on a daily basis for protein shakes or smoothies, and it is excellent at making blender drinks like these piña coladas.
I highly recommend getting one if you don’t have a good blender already.
I really, really wanted to make this with just coconut milk or coconut cream, rather than telling you to go out and buy cream of coconut, which is an ingredient that you will find in the drinks aisle by the alcoholic beverages – a place I rarely venture since we don’t drink alcohol in our home.
But I made a few different batches and recipes and shared them with friends we had over for dinner, and the version I’m sharing with you today was the hands-down winner.
It’s not that the others were bad (I tried various combinations of coconut milk, crushed pineapple, sugar, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut), but the Coco Lopez cream of coconut imparted the best coconut flavor that couldn’t be matched by any other approach and balanced out the pineapple just right.
Cream of coconut is just coconut milk that has been thickened and sweetened and it’s worth the extra effort of finding it in the store.
Pina Colada Tips
- You can add more cream of coconut if you want a more coconut forward version of this beverage. Or use frozen pineapple in place of some of the ice cubes for a more pineapple-y approach. A squeeze of lime juice can be a really tasty addition too!
- Double or triple the recipe if you are throwing a party and have more than 4 people! This recipe divides perfectly for our family of 4 with each serving being around 10-ounces each.
- Prep your garnishes in advance for easy assembly before the pina coladas start to melt. Little cocktail umbrellas are a fun and inexpensive idea and they are easy to find at most party stores.

Literally my go-to summer pool side drink! I’ll have to dust off my Vitamix for this. Love your photos!
I rarely order pina colada’s as a restaurant, but decided to splurge recently. That had me craving them so I looked up recipes and found yours. FANTASTIC! I used a few frozen pineapple chunks in place of the ice. YUM! So delicious! Thanks you!
Looked at a couple different recipes, but I’m so glad I picked this one!! Great flavors! I personally like a little extra coconut flavor so i added a few extra ounces cream of coconut. Great recipe!
Can’t wait to try this! It sounds really good. I’ve never had a Pina Colada before, but they’ve always sounded so delicious! And, even though it’s winter(as of when this comment was posted) and this is a summer drink, I’m definitely gonna make it.
Did you make it and was it good?
Never had to scroll so much to get to the recipe. Sheesh.

I might make this in a few days because my brother made Martha Stewart’s recipe today and it was too icy. I wanna try yours
Delicious!!! Just the way I love my piña colada!
Very good! Added some pineapple chunks in addition to everything else. Excellent recipe and spot on.
Way too much ice
Hello, these pineapple Pina Coladas look amazing!! I can’t wait to try them. But just wanted to know, did you buy pineapple 🍍 juice or did you juice a whole pineapple? Just wondering what would taste better. Thanks 😊
I always buy pineapple juice since I don’t have a juicer.
Why couldn’t you add rum flavoring to make it taste more so like the cocktail?
I’m sure you could!
Because this is a virgin pina colada. A regular pina colada can have alchohol.
This recipe is perfect! We like extra EXTRA coconut flavor and we weren’t reaching it so we thought and thought some more… low and behold we had some coconut creamer for our coffee in the fridge and that was the ticket! It was creamy on top of kicking up the coconut kick a bit!
Thank you for this recipe. I had to go buy the CREAM OF COCONUT… I assumed it was the same as coconut cream. It made all the difference. People, use CREAM OF COCONUT! I used frozen pineapple rather than ice.
Fantastic recipe! I used one cup of frozen pineapple in place of one of the cups of ice. Topped with whipped cream and a cherry! Also, I agree that Coco Lopez is the best!
Can you make this ahead of time and freeze it (like your Strawberry Daiquiris recipe you mention that you can make it ahead of time and just thaw it for 30 mins or so before stirring and serving)?
You had to venture into the alcohol aisle 😱😱
I love how creamy it is and you can really taste everything and it has great flavor

wish it could serve more ppl
Hi! The recipe card has serving size for 3-4 people. It’s easy to double or even triple the recipe if you are making it for more people!
I also don’t drink alcohol after watching today many close friends struggle with alcoholism, which is why I picked your recipe. I applaud you for trying to stay away from the alcohol isle. It may seem immature to shun the isle, but to me it’s a statement that your against the sadness abuse of alcohol can bring. A boat doesn’t sink until the first drop gets in or back in for us that have sunk once, or twice, who am kidding three times.
Yes, I have never had alcohol and don’t plan on ever having alcohol. I have also seen alcohol ruin lives and it is so sad to watch. I hope you enjoy the recipe!
Hi Amy,
I agree with you! Alcohol ruined my family, it caused so many fights & violence, plus there was never enough money for school excursions, lunch orders, new clothes. I missed out on a lot, Christmas & birthdays were a let down for 4 kids who were being raised or rather dragged up by their father who had money for beer & siggies & nothing else. There was no mother around, which in one way was good, because with her went the wine & the some of the physical abuse. Alcohol might be OK in tiny, tiny amounts, for me none is best!
Thank you for this amazing recipe. I wanted to know the storage of this drink. How long can it be stored in fridge if done before hand for Christmas.
Thanks again.
Because this is a frozen beverage it won’t store well at all in either the freezer or fridge. I wouldn’t make it more than 30 minutes in advance and keep it in the fridge right up until serving.
Overall, it was a decent recipe, but I added just a few extra tablespoons of sugar to make it sweeter.
I rarely order pina colada’s at a restaurant, but decided to try them recently. That had me craving them so I looked up recipes and found yours. FANTASTIC! I used a few frozen pineapple chunks in place of the ice. YUM! So delicious! Thanks you!
So, how do you make the cream of coconut? I think you left that bit out LOL!
You can just buy cream of coconut in the store. The Coco Lopez cream of coconut is my favorite. Cream of coconut is just coconut milk that has been thickened and sweetened.
I have fresh pineapples and would like to use the fresh pineapples instead of pineapple juice. How much fresh pineapple would I need? Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you.
Hmmm I am not 100% sure on how much juice a pineapple will yield. I guess it can depend on the size of the pineapple and how you juice it. But I am assuming you can get anywhere from 2-3 cups of juice from one pineapple.
Is there any way to make this a few hours ahead of time in preparation for a luau party???
Hmmm yes you technically could. You could freeze the mixture and then let it thaw out. The easiest thing might be to let it thaw out a bit when ready to use and blend it together with an immersion blender to turn it into a slushy consistency.
I didnt have pineapple juice but i replaced it with thawed frozen pineapple and tasted amazing thank you my family loved it
OH MY GOOD GOLLY G THIS RECIPE IS SOOOOO YUMMMY INNNNN MYYYYYY TUMMMYYYYYYY
I want my non-drinking friends to feel like they belong at the party. Your blog has wonderful non-alcoholic drink recipes. Thanks for the ideas!
This is not sweet enough if you are using TJ’s canned organic pineapple. I made upside down pineapple cake and thought of making pina colada with the leftover juice. I tried it out and used agave. Didn’t regret it 🙂
Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. So delicious!
Great! Glad you found it!
Thank fir the info. Tastes great.
Flavorless and watered down. Made two batches thinking I made a mistake the first time around.
Feel free to customize the drink to how you like it! Add more pineapple juice, add just plain sugar if you want it sweeter, use frozen pineapple chunks if you want more pineapple flavor, more or less coconut milk. Everyone’s tastes are different and this one is an easy one to adjust to how you want it to taste. I find the recipe suits our family just fine how it is and to be honest I hardly even measure anything anymore, I just go by taste. If you try again, let me know how it goes!
Didn’t have quite the amount of ice yet still tasted great!
Thanks so much for posting this non-alcoholic Pina Colada – I don’t drink anything alcohol because half a glass make me very, very ill. I did make one other change however – I hate coconut anything so I used real heavy cream instead. Yum!!!! Thanks again – it was perfect.
Oh great! I’m glad you could find a drink that you can enjoy!
Hello, I’ve tried many versions and this one is hands down the best mix! Taste is perfect to me! Just dont drink too fast! Brainfreeze, haha. Thank you!
Thank you! Oh man brain freezes are the worst!
